Kids Are Dying, Wes, end their daily coffin drops following a year of silence from Wes Streeting

LONDON, 24 AUGUST, 8:30PM— A group of trans youth and adults gathered outside Wes Streeting's constituency office to commemorate the year anniversary of daily paper coffin drops by Kids Are Dying, Wes (KADW), a campaign that was launched by Trans Kids Deserve Better (TKDB) last year. They held a moment of silence to reflect how Streeting has watched on for an entire year without comment.

In front of the office, the activists placed 365 tealights, signifying the days since they started leaving coffins outside Streeting's office, as well as a gravestone that read, "In lacking memory of Wes Streeting's Integrity, D.O.A. Trans Kids Deserve Better." They also decorated the office with over 50 of their signature paper coffins, coffin-shaped bunting that denoted a timeline of their campaign so far, and the large flowers seen at Trans+ Pride London earlier this year.

Many of the coffins called out Streeting's hypocrisy; they questioned how he could be gay yet transphobic. Others mourned trans people they knew, and the lives of those we never met. Multiple coffins rightfully called Streeting a traitor; shamed him; begged him to listen to trans people about our own healthcare. They asked how Streeting wanted to be remembered, and whether, as a Christian, he would be proud of his actions when faced by God.

The puberty blocker ban, led by Wes Streeting via the DHSC, is causing immeasurable harm to trans youth across the country. It, alongside the Cass review, and now the Supreme Court ruling and EHRC's guidance regarding it, have all been decisions led by ignorance and transphobia, a refusal to involve trans people in discussions about themselves, and a priority given to groups that explicitly oppose our existence. We will not back down when we are ignored.

KADW may be ending their daily coffin drops, but the campaign is not over.
